What this may and may not be used for.
This policy forms part of the terms of service. It applies to everyone who uses Rattlemap, on any plan, including the free one.
What it is for
Describing a noise from a vehicle you own, drive or are responsible for, so that a garage can reproduce it. That is the whole intended use.
Prohibited high-risk uses
Rattlemap must not be used for, or as any input into, decisions in the following areas. This is absolute and applies regardless of plan:
- Medical — diagnosis, treatment or any health decision.
- Legal — legal advice, evidence in proceedings, or determination of liability.
- Financial — lending, insurance underwriting, claims handling, valuation or investment.
- Safety — any determination that a vehicle, component or situation is safe. Rattlemap makes no safety assessment of any kind and its output must never be presented as one.
- Employment — hiring, assessment, discipline or dismissal.
- Credit — creditworthiness or credit terms.
- Housing — tenancy or accommodation decisions.
- Judicial — any judicial or quasi-judicial process.
Also prohibited
- Presenting anything Rattlemap produces as a diagnosis, an inspection, a roadworthiness assessment, a valuation or a professional opinion.
- Altering a description card so that it appears to say something it does not, or removing the statement of what is not known.
- Using the service in connection with the sale of a vehicle in a way that misleads a buyer about its condition.
- Uploading, or attempting to upload, any file. There is no upload channel; attempting to create one through the API or otherwise is a breach.
- Entering another person’s personal data, or anything identifying a specific vehicle such as a registration or chassis number.
- Scraping, bulk extraction, resale, or building a competing dataset from the service.
- Attempting to make the service produce a component name, a cause, a cost, a garage recommendation or a safety judgement, including by prompt manipulation.
- Circumventing the safety diversion, or encouraging anyone else to.
- Anything unlawful, or anything that infringes someone else’s rights.
- Interfering with the service: probing, overloading, or attempting to gain unauthorised access.
- Use by anyone under 18.
Why the safety rule is written this way
Rattlemap works by having you notice things over several days. That is the correct approach to an intermittent noise and the wrong approach to anything affecting how a vehicle brakes, steers or holds the road. Trying to get the service to keep going after it has stopped is not a clever workaround; it defeats the one rule the whole thing is built around.
If this policy is breached
We may suspend or close the account. Where we do, we tell you why, and unless the breach is serious we give you the chance to put it right first. If we close a paid account for anything other than a serious breach, we refund the unused part of the period. Serious or unlawful breaches may be reported to the appropriate authority.
