The terms this service is provided on.
Written to be read. Where something limits what you can expect, it says so plainly rather than burying it.
These terms apply between you and the operator of Rattlemap, whose registered details are on the legal information page. By creating an account, subscribing, or using the tool, you agree to them.
1. What Rattlemap is
Rattlemap is an online service that helps you describe a noise coming from a vehicle clearly enough that a garage can reproduce it. It sorts what you write into the dimensions a garage asks about, suggests things worth noticing during ordinary driving, and produces two cards: one to hand over, and one to read after you have parked.
What it produces is a description, not a conclusion.
2. What Rattlemap is not, and will not do
These are limits on the service itself, not disclaimers bolted on afterwards:
- It makes no diagnosis and names no component. It does not say what something might be or what it sounds like. It gives no list of possible causes, no ranking of likelihood and no fault codes. The conditions it organises are useful because a garage will ask about them; what those conditions point to is the garage’s work and not this service’s.
- It does not judge whether a vehicle is safe to drive. Anything involving braking, steering, the wheels, the suspension or any warning light must be checked by a qualified person before the vehicle is driven further, rather than observed over the following days. The service halts entirely when it detects such content and offers no way to continue.
- Every observation it suggests can only be made incidentally, during ordinary driving. It will never ask you to do anything special — never to coast in neutral, never to brake hard, and never to handle a phone or write anything down while the vehicle is moving. Anything you notice should be written down after you have parked.
- It estimates no repair cost, quotes no labour time, recommends no garage, chain, brand or platform, and does not judge whether any issue should be repaired or how urgent it is.
- It accepts no uploads of any kind, including audio recordings. There is no upload channel in the product.
- It holds no vehicle database. It makes no claim about any make or model.
- The vehicle’s condition, mileage, service history and specific construction are all unknown to it.
Rattlemap is not a substitute for inspection by a qualified person, and is not offered as one. See the AI notice.
3. Who may use it
You must be 18 or over. The service is for consumers and for ordinary business use of vehicles. It must not be used in any of the high-risk settings listed in the acceptable use policy.
4. Your account
Keep your password to yourself and tell us promptly if you think someone else has got into your account. You are responsible for what happens under it, except where that is our fault.
5. What you write stays yours
You keep every right in what you write. You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store your descriptions and observations, to sort them, and to produce your cards.
What you write is not used to train models — not ours, and not any third party’s. This is a term of this contract, not a setting you have to find and switch off.
6. Subscriptions, prices and renewals
- Plans are Free, Narrow and Fleet. Prices are on the pricing page, are in US dollars, and include VAT at 20%.
- Paid plans are subscriptions. They renew automatically — monthly, or every 12 months — until you cancel. The renewal amount and date are shown before you subscribe and repeated in your order confirmation.
- You may cancel at any time from your account. Cancellation stops the next renewal; your plan continues to work until the end of the period you have paid for.
- There is no minimum term, no notice period and no cancellation fee.
- If we change a price, we tell you in advance and in time for you to cancel before it takes effect.
7. Credits
Credits are a measure of service usage. They are not money, not stored value, not redeemable for cash and not transferable. They do not carry over between billing periods, and there is no way to buy more of them separately — if you run out, the only option is a higher plan or waiting for the period to reset.
There is no credit pack, no top-up and no stored value of any kind. Nothing on this site holds a balance you have paid money into.
8. Cancellation and refunds
Your statutory 14-day right to cancel, the two acknowledgements we ask for at checkout, when that right ends and how refunds work are all set out on the cancellation and refunds page, which also carries the statutory cancellation form.
9. Early implementation of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024
The subscription provisions of the DMCCA 2024 are not yet in force. We have chosen to implement five of them voluntarily and in advance, and we say so here so that it is clear this is early adoption rather than an existing legal requirement:
- Full pre-contract information — price, frequency, minimum term and how to cancel are all on one screen before you subscribe, not spread across pages.
- Reminder before every renewal — for monthly plans as well as annual ones, stating the amount and the date.
- A straightforward exit — cancellation takes two clicks in your account, with no retention flow, no telephone call and no notice period.
- No unexpected roll-over — a free trial or introductory price never turns into a paid or higher-priced subscription without a fresh, clearly-worded notice first.
- A fair refund position on renewals — if you cancel promptly after a renewal you did not intend and have not used the service in that period, we refund it.
10. Availability
We aim to keep the service running but do not promise it will be uninterrupted. We may change or withdraw features; where a change materially reduces what a paid plan does, we will tell you and you may cancel and receive a proportionate refund for the unused part of the period.
11. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights. In particular, nothing here excludes or limits any right you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, including the right to have digital content and services supplied with reasonable care and skill, as described, and fit for purpose. We do not exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Subject to that: because Rattlemap produces a description rather than a conclusion, and because it makes no assessment of any vehicle, we are not responsible for decisions taken about a vehicle, for work carried out on one, or for the cost of that work.
12. Ending this agreement
You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaches the acceptable use policy; where we do, we tell you why and, unless the breach is serious, give you a chance to put it right first. If we close a paid account other than for a serious breach, we refund the unused part of the period.
13. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you at least 30 days beforehand. If you do not want to accept the change, cancel before it takes effect and we will refund the unused part of the period.
14. Law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, with the exclusive jurisdiction of its courts. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you may also bring proceedings in the courts of the part of the United Kingdom where you live.
